Bat Out of Hell is a 1977 studio album by the American rock singer Meat Loaf . The songs werecomposed and writtenby Jim Steinman .
In 2001 the album was released along with three bonus tracks. The first bonus track is Great Boléros of Fire, which served as the overture to the Bat out of Hell live concerts and can also be heard as an eternity in the musical Tanz der Vampire . The second is a live version of Bat out of Hell (11:10), the third is the song Dead Ringer for Love (4:21), which was also written by Jim Steinman.
background
Musically, the album is shaped by Steinman's bombastic style. Some titles, such as Bat Out of Hell itself, come from his previously written musical Neverland .
Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman initially struggled to find a producer and label. After a long search, they finally came across guitarist and producer Todd Rundgren and the Cleveland International Records label . The album was not an instant hit; it sold rather slowly, but then became one of the best-selling albums of all time with around 43 million copies .
Around 200,000 copies were sold in 2014.
Influential Rolling Stone Magazine lists Bat Out of Hell at number 343 on its list of the 500 best albums of all time . Viewers of English TV magazine Top Gear voted Bat Out of Hell at number 3 in Top Gear's Top 5 Ultimate Driving Songs .
In 1993, the sequel Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell was released with the hit I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That) . In October 2006, the third part, Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose, was released . Contrary to the first two parts, in Bat Out of Hell III Jim Steinman is not involved in the project, but seven of his songs have been covered or taken from musicals. Instead, Desmond Child took over the production.
The album has been re-released over the years, mainly on Compact Disc , but also on Super Audio Compact Disc . These are partly remastered editions, partly special versions within the scope of certain series such as within the CD series Sony Mastersound - Collector's Edition as a remastered sound carrier (Sony Super Bit Mapping [SBM]) in gold look or as a black CD in Retro record look from the SPIEGEL EDITION series - The Vinyl Classic , where the label side has a vinyl groove look.
2014 received Bat Out Of Hell in Australia a 25 times platinum award , overtaking the album Whispering Jack by John Farnham , making it the biggest selling album of the Australian music history.
A musical of the same name based on the album premiered on February 17, 2017 in Manchester, and has since been shown in London and Toronto as well as in German-language premieres in Oberhausen.
