The Gray syndrome or Gray syndrome describes a clinical picture in premature and newborn babies.

It is based on a disruption in the breakdown of substances (more precisely: glucuronidation ) due to immaturity of the child's enzymes in the liver (immature liver). Glucuronidation only works from around the third month of life, calculated from the expected due date, which must be taken into account in the case of premature births.

The Gray syndrome manifests itself in ash-gray skin color (hence the name), temperature drop, vomiting, cyanosis , respiratory depression, refusal to eat, circulatory failure. Under certain circumstances the course of the disease can be fatal.

The therapy consists of the immediate discontinuation of the triggering drug (usually chloramphenicol ).
