The publishing house remained in the possession of the Mayer family, the book trade was sold to the employee Gustav Schwiening .

After several changes of ownership, the bookstore has been owned by the Falter family since 1950. Michael Falter became the owner after having worked for the company as a bookseller since 1921 .

Change of location

The crisis in the stationary book trade also troubled Mayer's bookstore. After the rapid expansion, the branch network shrank again. On Saturday, January 19, 2013, a report appeared in the Lüdenscheider Nachrichten, from which it emerged that the Mayersche bookstore is leaving Lüdenscheid after 4 years . The location on Sternplatz and Altenaer Straße was closed in April 2013. The location only partially fulfilled the expectations with which the new branch was opened in 2009. The competition is too big in Lüdenscheid. Further arguments for the closure were the difficult division of space over two floors and the forecast development. All employees have received a commitment to continue their employment at other locations. At the end of September 2012, Mayersche Buchhandlung closed its location in Iserlohn city center . In addition to the branch in Lüdenscheid, two further branches in Hamm and in Bochum's Ruhrpark were closed in 2013. There were also branch closings in Leverkusen and Cologne in 2012. The Mayersche bookshop in Koblenz closed at the end of June 2014. Other branches that had been closed in recent years were in Düren and Remscheid .

Bookstores opened again from autumn 2015. In September / October 2015, following the completion of the modernization of the shopping centers, one branch each was opened in the Ruhrpark Bochum and in the HUMA shopping park Sankt Augustin . After the closure of the Düsseldorf bookstore Stern-Verlag at the end of March 2016, Mayersche opened a third location in Düsseldorf across the street.

Branches were also opened in Cologne, Ahlen , Bergheim , Kerpen , Pulheim and Ratingen . The city with the most branches is Cologne (seven).
