The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is a 7740 km² nature reserve on the Kenai Peninsula of the US state Alaska . The Wildlife Refuge borders the Chugach National Forest to the east and Kenai Fjords National Park and the Harding Icefield to the southeast . The Sterling Highway crosses the reserve in an east-west direction at the level of Soldotna .
The sanctuary, which is home to brown bears , Dall sheep , elk and reindeer , was established in 1941 as the Kenai Moose Range . In 1980 it was given its current name and status under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act . The 5480 km² wilderness area Kenai Wilderness, also designated in 1980, is located within the refuge.
The refuge is managed by the World Conservation Union in category IV ( biotope and species protection area ).
