Kenai is an American city in Alaska in the Kenai Peninsula Borough .

Kenai ( Kahtnu Qayah ) was named after Kenai Peninsula ( Yaghanen - 'the good land'), whose name probably derives from the Russian Kenayskaya or Kenaitze ('people of the plains' or 'people of kena'). Both the English derivation and the Russian name are derived from the North Athapaskan word Kenai or Kena ('flat, meadow, open area with few trees; plain, low elevation') of the Dena'ina (also Tanaina - 'the people ') '), according to the Dena'ina Topical Dictionary by James Kari from 2007. The Dena'ina resident here speak the Outer Inlet Dena'ina dialect and called themselves Knaiakhotana (' People of the Kenai Peninsula ') or Kahtnut'ana (' People along the Kenai River '). Today the Kenaitze Indian Tribe is based here. The various groups of Dena'ina inhabited large coastal areas in southern Alaska, mainly in the catchment areas of the Cook Inlet ( Tikahtnu - 'Big Water River' - 'Wide, much water-bearing river') and Clark Lake .

history

Archaeological research suggests that the place dates back to around 1000 BC. Was settled by the Kachemak before they were displaced by the Athapaskan Dena'ina around 1000 AD.

Before the arrival of the Russians, the Dena'ina settlement Shk'ituk't ('where we slide down') existed here with around 1000 residents. 1741 came Russian dealer for Shk'ituk't and erected there in 1791 a trading post, Fort St. Nicholas . This makes Kenai the second permanent Russian settlement in Alaska. The Russian traders corrupted the name of the Kahtnut'ana in Kenaitze

Hostilities between the indigenous peoples and Russian settlers came to light in 1797 when an incident later known as the Battle of Kenai attacked Dena'ina Fort St. Nicholas, killing both of them more than 100 Parties were to be complained about. Later, in 1838, smallpox killed half of the Dena'ina population so that they could no longer successfully resist the settlers.

After Alaska was sold to the United States in 1869, the US Army established a fort on the site of Kenai, but it was quickly abandoned. After a state prospector named Alexander King found gold near Kenai in 1888, many prospectors and traders soon settled in the city.

In 1957 the first major oil well was discovered 20 kilometers from Kenai .

The previous heat record in Kenai was measured on July 4, 2019 at 31.6 ° C.
