geography

Saint-Arailles is located around 18 kilometers west of Auch in the center of the Gers department. The Osse crosses the municipality in a northerly direction. The community consists of numerous scattered settlements and individual farmsteads.

history

The community was settled early on. This is documented by a grave column from Gallo-Roman times. The present place was founded in the 13th century as a fortified village (castelnau). In the Middle Ages, Saint-Arailles was in the county of Vic-Fezensac within the Armagnac region in the historic Gascony region and shared its fate. From 1793 to 1801, Saint-Arailles belonged to the canton of Barran and the district of Auch. Since 1801, Saint-Arailles has been assigned to the arrondissement Auch and from 1801 to 2015 it belonged to the canton of Vic-Fezensac (originally called canton Vic-sur-Losse). The municipality in its current form was created in 1821 by the merger of the old municipality of Saint-Arailles (1821: 332 inhabitants) with the municipality of Saint-Jean-d'Anglès (1821: 89 inhabitants).

Population development

The population development is typical for a French rural community. The developments between 1793 and 1831 are normal with strong growth and the subsequent strong rural exodus from 1850. There was a strong decline in population during the First World War. After stabilization after the First World War, another wave of emigration followed in 1936. The previous low point was reached in 1999.
