Jegun ( Gaskognisch Jigun ) is a French commune with 1,144 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the arrondissement Auch and the canton Gascogne-Auscitaine . Jegun is also a member of the Grand Auch Cœur de Gascogne community association founded in 2001 . The inhabitants are called Jegunois (es) .

location

Jegun is located on a hill west of the small river Loustère . The community includes the village, several hamlets and numerous small settlements and individual farms. The place is about 16 kilometers northwest of the small town Auch in the center of the Gers department. The city of Tarbes is around 66 kilometers to the south-west.

history

The bastide was probably built in the 11th century. The castle was built around 1180. In 1577 Heinrich von Navarra besieged the place. The community belonged to the district of Auch from 1793 to 1801. It has been part of the Auch arrondissement since 1801. From 1793 to 2015, the municipality was the capital of the canton of Jegun (sometimes called Jégun).
