Castelnau-Barbarens ( Gaskognisch Castèthnau-Barbarens ) is a French commune with 528 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the arrondissement Auch and the canton Astarac-Gimone . Castelnau-Barbarens is also a member of the Grand Auch Cœur de Gascogne community association founded in 2001 . The inhabitants are called Castelnausiens / Castelnausiennes .
location
Castelnau-Barbarens lies on a hill east of the Arrats river . The municipality includes the village of Castelnau-Barbarens, the hamlets of Pépieux and Saint-Guiraud and numerous individual farms. The place is about 14 kilometers southeast of the city also in the southeast of the Gers department.
history
Finds from the Neolithic Age and the remains of a villa from the Gallo-Roman period attest to early settlement.
In 1140 the place was first mentioned by name in a document as Castèt nàou dé Barbaréncs . The community belonged to the district of Auch from 1793 to 1801. It has been part of the Auch arrondissement since 1801. From 1793 to 2015 the municipality was within the canton of Saramon . In 1821, the previously independent communities Grenadette (1821: 98 inhabitants), Pépieux (1821: 43 inhabitants) and Saint-Guiraud (1821: 191 inhabitants) were incorporated.
