Bédéchan is a French commune with 152 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement Auch and the canton Astarac-Gimone (until 2015: canton Saramon ).

The inhabitants are called Bédéchanais and Bédéchanaises .

Bédéchan is about 19 kilometers southeast of Auch in the historic province of Armagnac .

Bédéchan is located in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Gimone , one of its tributaries, forms the natural border with the neighboring municipality of Aurimont to the east. Tributaries of the Gimone cross the territory of the municipality:

  • the Ruisseau de Lamazon,
  • the Ruisseau du Pontet,
  • the Ruisseau de la Gavache and
  • the Ruisseau du Séjour.

history

In 1821 the former municipality of Fanjaux was incorporated.

Population development

After the beginning of the records, the population rose to a high of around 395 by the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community sank with interim recovery phases until the 1980s to the lowest level of around 100 inhabitants, before it had since the beginning the 21st century set a phase of growth that continues to this day.

Attractions

  • Parish church of Saint-Abdon-St-Sennen with a holy water font from a previous building and a tabernacle made of painted wood from the 18th century, which has been inscribed as a monument historique since November 8, 1996 .
  • Church in the hamlet of Fanjaux. In July 2018, lightning struck the bell tower's helmet and blew away its entire roof.
