history

In the Middle Ages , a landscape between Samatan and L'Isle-Jourdain , the Cogotois, was formed. It roughly covered the areas of today's municipalities of Clermont-Savès , Marestaing , Monferran-Savès , Labastide-Savès and Auradé . The first landlord settled in his castle in Castillon towards the end of the eleventh century. Four noble families followed between 1200 and 1791. The Marestang family ruled from 1200 to 1499. The French king elevated them to the rank of Viscounts in 1342 and Géraud de Marestang from King Louis XI in 1470 . elevated to a knight . Because of his cleverness, in 1490 he was one of the keepers of his lord Charles d'Armagnac, who was sick with madness . Leaving no descendants, he was followed by a nephew from the d'Astarac Fontrailles family, a wealthy, influential and Protestant family that distinguished itself through brutality during the Huguenot Wars . In 1576 Henry IV , then King of Navarre, appointed Michel d'Astarac Fontrailles as Seneschal of L'Isle-Jourdain, around 1610 his son Benjamin as Governor of Auch, and around 1650 his grandson became Seneschal of Fézensac and Armagnac . The latter left his title of margrave and his property to à Jean-Paul de Rochechouart in 1677, who thirteen years later gave rulership over the Cogotois to Jean Emery de Preissac d'Esclignac from a family of brave soldiers. He fought as a musketeer and was seriously injured in the siege of Maastricht in 1676. His daughter married in the castle of Castillon Alexandre de Percin de Montguillard de la Valette in 1714. His granddaughter Françoise-Madeleine was born in the castle and married in the castle Arnaud de Gontaud-Biron, Count of Saint-Blancard, in 1744 .

His great-granddaughter Marie de Gontaud Biron also married Philippe Maurice de Vissec, Count of Ganges , at the castle in 1766 . Henri de Preissac d'Esclignac, last Viscount des Cogotois, married Elisabeth Ursula Anna Cordula Xaveria of Saxony, niece of King Louis XVI , in 1787 . and granddaughter of August III. , Duke of Saxony and King of Poland . This marriage raised him to the rank of duke. When the French Revolution broke out, the Duke of Esclignac emigrated during the greatest unrest in 1791. His former subjects looted the castle in 1793 and set the roofs on fire. For several years the ruins served the Castillonnais as a source of building material for the construction or expansion of their houses. Antoine Lacroix had a town house built on the site in 1827.

Population development

After the beginning of the records, the population rose to a high of 600 by the first half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to its lowest level of 160 inhabitants by the 1970s, before a phase with at times ceased strong growth, which continues to this day.
