The DR Ks 4859… 4993 series are storage locomotives with the B wheel arrangement, which were manufactured by Windhoff in 1930 .

Some locomotives were in service with the Deutsche Bundesbahn until the late 1970s . They were then used as devices in various repair shops. Some have been preserved as memorials or still in service.

history

After the results with the prototype locomotives of the DR series Ks , a uniform construction was determined. After that, Windhoff produced 35 locomotives as storage locomotives with the numbering in the range Ks 4859… 4993 . There was no consecutive numbering because they were numbered together with the diesel-powered locomotives of the DR small locomotive performance group II for three years .

technical description

The vehicles could only be distinguished from the Kö II by the lower and more angular front end. Windhoff was involved in the manufacture of the mechanical part, and Siemens-Schuckertwerke were involved in the drive motors and controls. AEG supplied the batteries .

In contrast to the prototype AEG A6000–6003 , the series locomotives only had an electric motor that drove the axles with a chain transmission. As with the Kö II, the vehicle control was carried out in the driver's cab. The vehicles did not have a continuous brake .

commitment

They were mostly used in the interior of factories, where no exhaust gases should be produced and where the vehicles could be positioned with centimeter precision at their low continuous speed.

During the Second World War , the vehicles were not dependent on fuel . After the war they were taken over by the Deutsche Bundesbahn , with the exception of one locomotive that remained in Austria . The series designation was changed from Ks to Ka in 1960 . In 1955 the DB had 33 vehicles, in 1971 eight machines were still operational.

DB Ka / 381

  • The Ka 4862 drove for many years at Cologne-Deutzerfeld train station , where it was redrawn as 381 005-8 . After being taken out of service on December 31, 1980, it was used in the internal shunting facility until 2013. In 1996 it was renamed Ka 4862 after a refurbishment , came to the DB Museum Koblenz in 2014 and is maintained by the BSW leisure group for the preservation of historic railway vehicles in Koblenz.
  • The Ka 4909, 4910 and 4979 were based in Munich and used there in the AW München-Freimann . They have been redrawn as 381 011-6 , 381 012-4 and 381 016-5 . After retirement on April 2, 1969, the 381 011-6 was used as the Ka 721.90.00.03 device in the Munich-Freimann AW until 1996 and then handed over to the Bavarian Railway Museum in Nördlingen . In 2018 it was unrestored. The 381 012-4 was taken out of service on March 18, 1979 and used as the Ka 721.90.00.02 device in the Munich-Freimann AW until 1996. Then she came to the Bavarian Railway Museum in Nördlingen, which gave the locomotive to the city of Dorfen in 2001 as a memorial for the former Dorfen – Velden railway line . The 381 016-5 was taken out of service on March 18, 1979 and used as the Ka 721.90.00.01 device in the Munich-Freimann AW until 1994. Then it came to the Bavarian Railway Museum, which returned the locomotive to Deutsche Privatbahn GmbH in Hameln under its DB number. In 2010 she came to the Rügen Oldtimer Museum .
  • The Ka 4984 was in use at the Limburg repair shop and was renamed 381 018-1 . After being taken out of service on February 3, 1972, it was used as device 721.9000 at the Opladen repair shop . In 1994 she received her number 381 018-1 back and was returned to active service on September 20, 1994. On July 1, 1996 it was taken out of service again and used again as a device in the AW Opladen. When the plant closed in November 2004, the battery locomotive came to the Dessau repair shop , where it was still available in 2019.
  • The Ka 4986 became the 381 013-2 and after it was taken out of service at the end of the 1960s, it was used by the municipal utilities in Rosenheim . The locomotive came to the Bavarian Moor and Peat Museum in Rottau am Chiemsee in 1998 .
  • The Ka 4987 was handed over to the 381 020-7 and in 1997 to the Nuremberg Transport Museum. In 2002 it was awarded as a device to the Mainz-Bischofsheim depot.
