Pessan ( same name in Gaskognisch ) is a French commune with 671 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the arrondissement Auch and the municipality of Grand Auch Cœur de Gascogne . Its inhabitants call themselves Pessannais / Pessannaises .
geography
Pessan is about 6 kilometers southeast of the city Auch in the center of the Gers department. The Arçon River crosses the municipality and in parts forms the western municipal boundary. The community consists of the village of Pessan and numerous individual farms. In terms of traffic, the community is a few kilometers south of the N124 and east of the N21 .
history
Remains from the Gallo-Roman period prove an early settlement. A Benedictine abbey was founded as early as the 9th century. This lasted until the French Revolution. A bastide was built in its vicinity around 1270 and thus the place Pessan. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the county of Astarac, which was part of the province of Gascony. The community belonged to the District of Auch from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Pessan was part of the Canton of Auch from 1793 to 1801. From 1801 to 1973 it was in the Canton of Auch-Sud. Then from 1973 to 2015 within the canton of Auch-Sud-Est-Seissan . The municipality has been assigned to the arrondissement Auch since 1801. In 1821 the previous municipality of Lartigolle (1821: 25 inhabitants) came to Pessan.
