Jean Jouvenet: self-portrait

Jean-Baptiste Jouvenet (* 1644 in Rouen , † 5. April 1717 in Paris ) was a French painter of Classicism . He is one of the main representatives of religious painting in France.

Life

He was the most prominent representative of a Rouen- based family of painters and sculptors. In 1661 he joined the workshop of Charles Le Brun in Paris and was employed by him from at least 1669 in the furnishing of several castles, such as the ( Palais des Tuileries , the Castle of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and the Versailles ) .

From 1685 Jean Jouvenet created mainly paintings with religious subjects for churches and monasteries in Paris and in the provinces, but also several large mythological works for the Great Trianon in Versailles and the castles of Marly and Meudon .

The painter was 1694-1709 instrumental in the facilities of the Parliament of Rennes and the now somewhat misleading Invalides mentioned Chapelle Royale of the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris and the chapel at Versailles . He also designed numerous cardboard boxes for picture knitting , primarily for the Paris tapestry manufactory .

Paralysis forced him to paint with his left hand in the last years of his life. He died on April 5, 1717 in Paris and was buried there in the church of St-Sulpice de Paris .
