La Souterraine ( Occitan La Sotarrana ) is a French municipality with 5207 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It is located in the Creuse department in the Arrondissement Guéret and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of La Souterraine . The inhabitants are called Sostraniennes .
geography
La Souterraine is located about 30 kilometers west-northwest of Guéret and about 48.5 kilometers north-northeast of Limoges between the Benaize and Sédelle rivers . This is where the Brame rises . The national route 145 (also European route 62 ) leads through the village . La Souterraine train station is on the Les Aubrais-Orléans-Montauban-Ville-Bourbon line .
The Via Lemovicensis , one of the four historical " Paths of the Pilgrims of St. James in France ", leads through the town.

history
Originally there was a Gallo-Roman settlement here, which was later replaced by La Souterraine. The name itself indicates a crypt (lat. Subterranea ). The place was mentioned in a document in 1268. Already in 1017 the Count of Crozant, Gerald, mentioned the place as Ville Sosterranea . Construction of the Romanesque church began in 1019, to be converted to Gothic style in 1220.
