Saint-Vaury ( Occitan Sent Vauric ) is a place and several hamlets (hamlets) existing southern French municipality with 1753 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

location

Saint-Vaury is located in the wooded low mountain range of the Limousin about 78 km northeast of Limoges or about 12 km northwest of Guéret at an altitude of just under 460 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is temperate; Rain falls throughout the year.

The continuous population decline since the beginning of the 20th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture as well as the associated loss of jobs.

economy

The place and its surroundings were dominated by agriculture for centuries; Most of the people lived on the produce of their fields and gardens as self-sufficient ; livestock and viticulture were also practiced. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers of all kinds have settled in the village.

history

Valerius von Bernage , venerated as a saint after his death, already spent a few months of his life in Boanerges - the old place name - before he withdrew to a nearby mountain. The place got its name later.

Attractions

  • The church of Saint-Julien-de-Brioude et Saint-Vaury has foundations from the 11th century; conversions continue to exist from the following centuries - the facade design dates from the 16th century, the apse was added after it collapsed in 1792 Between 1824 and 1826, the top of the bell tower , damaged by a thunderstorm , was redesigned in 1924. Despite all this, the building has been recognized as a Monument historique since 2004 .

  • The 635 m high summit of Mont Bernage can be hiked; from here there are beautiful views of the surrounding low mountain range.

Personalities

  • Valerius von Bernage (around 537–620), spent many years as a hermit on the nearby 635 m high Mont Bernage (or Puy de Trois Cornes ); he is venerated as a saint in the region to this day .
  • William Chervy (* 1937), physician and politician, was the French Senator for Creuse from 1981 to 1998.
