from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Valerius von Bernage (French: Saint Valéric , Saint Valéry , Saint Vaury u. Ä .; * around 550, † around 620) was a hermit in the south of France , who was later venerated as a saint .

Life

According to tradition, Valerius is said to come from what is now Belgium. Around the year 565 he went to Limoges to see the grave of the widely famous St. Martial (3rd century) to arrive. He later retired to the seclusion of the Bernage Mountains near Guéret to live there as a hermit. Apart from a few other visits to Martial's tomb, he lived in the seclusion of the forest, where other hermits followed him.

Adoration

St. Valerius is rarely venerated in France either. The town of Saint-Vaury in the Creuse department bears his name and the church of Boisseuilh is dedicated to him. His feast day is January 10th.

presentation

Only one late medieval depiction of the saint is known; it is in the church of Boisseuilh . A few stained glass windows with fictional representations date from the 19th and 20th centuries.
