The District of La Souterraine (Occitan Canton La Sotrane ) is a French canton in the Arrondissement Guéret in the Creuse in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ; its main town is La Souterraine .

history

The canton was established on February 15, 1790. From 1801 to 2015, ten parishes belonged to the canton of La Souterraine. With the reorganization of the cantons in France, three municipalities moved to other cantons.

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the canton of La Souterraine included the ten municipalities of Azerables , Bazelat , La Souterraine , Noth , Saint-Agnant-de-Versillat , Saint-Germain-Beaupré , Saint-Léger-Bridereix , and Saint-Maurice -la-Souterraine , Saint-Priest-la-Feuille and Vareilles . Its layout corresponded to an area of ​​273.29 km ² . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 2325.

In the runoff election for the General Council of the Creuse Department on March 29, 2015, the pairing Marie-France Galbrun-Gallerand / Etienne Lejeune (PS) won against Jean-François Cotet / Lise Gaudin UMP, then LR with a share of the vote of 52.81% (voter turnout : 54.38%).
