The Puerto de Ibañeta ( French Col de Roncevaux ) is a pass in the Spanish Pyrenees . It lies at an altitude of 1057 msnm and connects Valcarlos with Roncesvalles via the N 135 national road .
At the top of the pass stands the modern chapel of San Salvador , which replaces an older chapel. It marks the starting point of the Camino Francés , which includes three of the four French pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela : the Via Podiensis from Puy and Conques, the Via Turonensis - from Paris, Tours and Poitiers and the Via Lemovicensis - from Vezelay, Limoges and Périgueux coming.
The pass has been an important crossing point for the Pyrenees since prehistoric times, at least since Roman times there was a pass station, later a monastery and hostel was set up for pilgrims to St. James in Roncesvalles . The monks of the monastery also occupied the chapel on the pass and rang the bells in fog to show pilgrims the way.
Charlemagne passed the pass twice in 778 as part of his Spanish campaign , while retreating his rearguard was ambushed. This conflict came to be known as the Battle of Roncesvalles .
