Viticulture in Menetou Salon

Menetou-Salon has a very old history of viticulture . Documents from 1063 already show donations of vineyards to the important monastery of Saint-Sulpice-lès-Bourges . The proximity to the city of Bourges and the limestone soils that are favorable for viticulture, which are similar to those in Sancerre , 30 km away, had a positive effect on the development of viticulture. Today 487 hectares of a total of 1090 hectares of approved vineyards are planted. The area is spread over the ten communes of Menetou-Salon , Aubinges , Morogues , Parassy , Pigny , Quantilly , Saint-Céols , Soulangis , Vignoux-sous-les-Aix and Humbligny . The wine has had the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) since January 23, 1959 . 90 winemakers, six of whom work full-time in the vineyard, share the vineyards. The area is part of the Val de Loire wine-growing region .

The white wines , which make up around 64% of the annual wine production of around 21,000 hectoliters, are made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape variety (305 hectares of vineyards). They are fresh, spicy wines that should be drunk young.

The red wines (34% of the production) and the rosé wines (2%) are made from the Pinot Noir grape variety (182 hectares of vineyards). Both wines are fruity and delicate and should also be drunk young. The red wines can also be drunk chilled at around 12 to 14 ° C.
