Azy is a French municipality with 445 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Cher in the region Center-Val de Loire . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Bourges and the canton of Saint-Germain-du-Puy .

Azy is located at an average altitude of 207 meters above sea ​​level , 26 kilometers northeast of Bourges , the seat of the prefecture of the Cher department. The municipality has an area of ​​27.62 square kilometers.

History and population development

Azy was first mentioned in a document in 1178. 1793 received Azy in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality and 1801 the right to local self-government.

Azy had the most inhabitants in 1891. After that, the population fell until 1990, when the community only had 413 inhabitants.

Attractions

In the choir of the Saint Sulpice le Pieux church, traces of the original Romanesque church can still be seen . The vaulted roof of the nave was built in the 13th or 14th century. The west portal is flanked by pilasters decorated in the Renaissance style. Today the church belongs to the parish of Baugy .
