(1226) Golia is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on April 22, 1930 by the Dutch astronomer Hendrik van Gent in Johannesburg .

The asteroid is named after Jakob Gool (Jacobus Golius), an orientalist who founded the Leiden observatory in the 17th century and succeeded Willebrord Snell as professor of mathematics and astronomy at Leiden University .
