The Sud-Ouest wine-growing region

Vins d'Estaing is a small appellation ( VDQS ) for wine in south-west France (→ Sud-Ouest ). The cultivation area named after the town of Estaing is located 25 km northeast of Rodez in the Aveyron department and is the smallest VDQS with a cultivation area of over 20 hectares (as of 2011). In 2002, 444 hl red and 36 hl white wine were produced on the approved vineyards of the communities of Estaing, Coubisou and Sébrazac .

Soil and climate

In view of the harsh, continental climate in the Massif Central , the vineyards of Estaing are located exclusively on steep, terraced southern slopes of the valley created by the Lot River . The soil has a high proportion of slate .

Grape varieties and wines

Despite the small area under cultivation, a number of different grape varieties are grown: red wine is made from Fer Servadou ( called Mansoi here ), Gamay , Cabernet Franc , Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot , Négrette de Banhars (probably related to Abouriou ) and Pinotous d'Estaing , a local one Variant of Pinot Noir pressed. The varieties Négrette , Duras , Jurançon Noir , Mouyssaguès and Castets are also permitted . The red wines have a pronounced fruity character and should be drunk young. Rosé wines are partly obtained as saignée as a by-product of red wine production, and partly pressed independently.

Chenin Blanc and Mauzac flow into the white wines . They are dry and aromatic and have a good shelf life.

history

Viticulture in the upper Lot valley dates back to the 9th century. The first vineyards were planted by the Conques monks . Viticulture always served only to satisfy local needs. At the beginning of the 20th century the area under vines was almost 1,000 hectares, but it was mainly planted with grape varieties of inferior quality. These products could not withstand the competition later. The efforts of the remaining winemakers were crowned in 1965 with the award of VDQS status. This also formed the impetus to cultivate abandoned vineyard terraces again. The majority of production is now done by the local wine cooperative .
