Mauzac blanc

The Mauzac is a white wine that is grown exclusively in the south of France . It occurs in different varieties, which are called yellow , green , pink , reddish or black mauzac according to the color of the berries . It is robust and not very sensitive to frost. The Mauzac delivers an aromatic and quite full-bodied white wine that improves for several years after bottling, despite its low acidity . It is also suitable for aging in barriques .

Its aroma is reminiscent of apples, with sweet Spätlese also of pears.

The Mauzac plays a role in two wine-growing regions: In the AOC Gaillac in the Tarn department , it still takes up the largest part of the area under cultivation among the white grape varieties. Its historical origin can probably also be found there. Its cultivation has been documented there since the 18th century, but it is probably much older.

Mauzac also dominates the sparkling wines of Limoux in the Aude department . In the Blanquette de Limoux , which got its name from the white fluff on the underside of the leaf of the Mauzac, it must make up at least 90%, in the Crémant de Limoux its share must not exceed 20%. In the Blanquette méthode ancestrale , which is produced according to the old production method , the Mauzac represents 100 percent of the vine material. The grape variety plays a subordinate role in the production of Armagnac . In 2007, a planted vineyard area of 2,077 hectares was surveyed in France (source ONIVINS)

While the Mauzac Rose variety is considered a mutation of the Mauzac, the Mauzac Noir variety does not appear to be related.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The tip of the shoot is very hairy with white wool, with a crimson tinge. The young leaves are slightly hairy and yellowish in color.
  • The small and thick leaves are usually whole or three-lobed and then hardly curved. The stem bay is closed with the ends overlapping. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set very wide in comparison to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The cone-shaped grape is medium-sized, often shouldered and dense berries. The round berries are medium-sized and golden-white in color.

The Mauzac grape variety sprouts late and matures about 20 days after the Gutedel : It is therefore one of the mid-late maturing varieties. It is often attacked by gray mold rot. Against powdery mildew and downy mildew , it is quite resistant.
