Grape of the Duras grape variety

The Duras is a red wine variety grown exclusively in southwestern France . It is a very old grape variety. The medium-sized, round berries are blue-black and have a relatively thick skin. The Duras prefers light sandy or chalky soils, is early ripening, but sensitive to Oidium . The wines made from it are round and harmonious with a characteristic, peppery fruit.

The growing area of the Duras is limited to the Tarn department , where it occupies an important place among the approved grape varieties with a planted area of 949 hectares (as of 2007). It gives many traditional red wines from the AOC Gaillac their typical character - often blended with the Fer Servadou , Gamay , Négrette or Syrah varieties .

A broad-based DNA analysis showed that the Tressot is a likely natural cross between the Duras and Petit Verdot grape varieties .

Synonyms

The grape variety Duras is also known under the names Cabernet Duras, Durade, Duras femelle, Duras mâle, Duras rouge, Duraze or Durazé.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is densely hairy with white wool, with a slightly reddish tinge. The yellowish young leaves are lightly woolly hairy and spotted bronze.
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed (occasionally even seven- or nine-lobed) and deeply indented. The stalk bay is closed lyren-shaped. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are set closely compared to other grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is fine-bubble. In autumn the leaves turn red in parts.
  • The cylindrical to cone-shaped grape is large, winged and dense berries. The slightly oval berries are small and almost black in color.

The grape variety ripens about 15 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen early. It sprouts quite early and therefore does not always escape the late frosts of spring. It is susceptible to powdery mildew . Duras is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
