The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture have led to a continuous population decline since the second half of the 19th century. The renewed increase in the number of inhabitants at the beginning of the 21st century is due to the relative proximity to the greater Toulouse area.

economy

For centuries, the residents of the community lived on the produce of their fields and gardens, self-sufficient ; In addition, livestock, viticulture and perhaps also the cultivation of woad (pastel) were operated. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers settled in the village itself. Viticulture has been practiced on a large scale again since the middle of the 20th century; the place and its neighboring communities have their own Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC). Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses, but also new buildings, have been used as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .

history

The place was - probably on the background of a donation of land - in 1122 by monks of St. Sacerdos of Limoges consecrated Benedictine abbey of Sarlat-la-Caneda founded; over time the name changed to Saint-Sardos . The place was probably not completely untouched by the Albigensian Crusade (1209–1229) and the Hundred Years War (1337–1453), but exact evidence is not available.
