Vins d'Entraygues et du Fel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vins d'Entraygues et du Fel form a small appellation ( VDQS ) for wine in southwestern France (→ Sud-Ouest ). Strictly speaking, the appellation covers two wine-growing regions : In the vicinity of Entraygues-sur-Truyère, 50 km north of Rodez , a dry white wine is produced on 6 hectares of cultivated land (151 hl in 2002). In the hill country around the municipalities of Le Fel and viellevie , a few kilometers to the west, mainly red wine is grown on 15 hectares (508 hl 2002). Most of the growing area is in the Aveyron department , but also touches the neighboring Cantal .

Soil and climate

Entraygues-sur-Truyère at the mouth of the Truyère in the Lot

The vineyards are located on steep, terraced southern slopes of the valleys formed by the Lot and Truyère rivers . They are among the most spectacular in France. The barren soil is shaped by the granite of the Massif Central. At Entraygues it has a high proportion of slate . The climate is dominated by continental regions. Mediterranean influences create the prerequisites for the grapevine to mature in protected locations.

Grape varieties and wines

Grape varieties and wines have parallels to the neighboring area of Estaing . The Chenin Blanc , known here as Gamay Blanc , has assumed a dominant role in white wine, while the Mauzac known from Gaillac has almost disappeared. It has distinctive fruit (apples, almonds) and an intense bouquet . Its strong acidity gives it good storage potential .

The red wine is mainly made from Fer Servadou - called Mansoi here . Gamay , Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon also flow into the cuvées . Merlot , Mouyssaguès and Pinot Noir are also permitted . The red wines are fruity and smooth. Rosé wines are obtained as a by-product of red wine production.

history

Viticulture in the upper Lot valley dates back to the 9th century. The first vineyards were planted by the Conques monks . In the Middle Ages, many vineyards belonged to the Bishops of Rodez. They later met the needs of the citizens of Aurillac and the farmers of Aubrac . Before the phylloxera disaster , around 1,000 hectares were planted. The subsequent decline led to the abandonment of most of the very difficult to cultivate vineyards. In 1965 the wines received the status of a VDQS. A handful of independent winemakers keep viticulture alive in the region today.
