Vins du Thouarsais

The Vins du Thouarsais wine region is located near the municipality of Thouars , halfway between Angers and Poitiers in central France. The wine-growing region belongs to the large Loire wine-growing region . Vins du Thouarsais is located north of the appellation Haut-Poitou and south of the appellations Anjou and Saumur .

Vins du Thouarsais was classified as VDQS on August 10, 1966 and upgraded to AOC in 2011 .

The vineyards currently cover almost 24 hectares in 16 communities; Approx. 1000 hl of white, red and roseé wines are produced. The appellation is used by around 15 winemakers. The areas are located at an altitude of 90 110  m . The soil is extremely heterogeneous. Good white wines grow on yellow limestone from the geological age of the Toarcium . There are also granite and slate floors.

The dry red wines are a blend of the grape varieties Gamay , Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The harvest restriction is 50 hectoliters per hectare. The minimum alcohol content is a low 9  percent by volume and must not exceed 12.5% in the case of chaptalization . The ruby ​​red, fruity wines should be drunk within two to three years of harvesting. The drinking temperature should be 15–17 ° C.

The rosé wines are also made from Gamay, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their optimal drinking temperature is 10 ° C.

The dry white wines are made as a blend of the grape varieties Chenin Blanc (min. 80% share) and Chardonnay . The straw yellow wines should be drunk within one to two years after the harvest. The drinking temperature should be 10–12 ° C.
