Saint-Varent is a French commune with 2,445 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Deux-Sèvres in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . Saint-Varent belongs to the Arrondissement Bressuire and the canton Le Val de Thouet (until 2015: canton Saint-Varent ). The inhabitants are called Saint-Varentais .

Saint-Varent is located on the Thouaret River . The municipality is part of the Vins du Thouarsais wine region . Saint-Varent is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Luzay in the north, Taizé-Maulais in the northeast, Saint-Généroux in the east, Airvault in the southeast, Glénay in the south, Pierrefitte in the southwest, Sainte-Gemme in the west and Luché-Thouarsais in the west and northwest.

Saint-Varent train station is on the Chartres – Bordeaux line .
