economy
In earlier times the inhabitants lived as self-sufficiency from the yields of their fields and gardens as well as from the milk and meat of their animals. Only with the improvement of the roads could surpluses be sold on the supraregional market. The community is still largely agricultural; near the place a ford (gué) (later a bridge) led over the Thouaret. Small traders and craftsmen have settled in the village.
history
The place has a Gallo-Roman origin; it was on a trade route leading from Pictavium ( Poitiers ) to Portus Namnetus ( Nantes ). The place name, first mentioned in the 10th century, is probably derived from a Gallo-Roman landlord named Cassius . In 1214 the place was destroyed during the Anglo-French War; in 1558 the church of the place was destroyed in the course of the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598). In the years 1793/4 Chiché took a counter-revolutionary position; 24 people were then executed.
