Aligoté

The Aligoté is a white wine variety .

In Burgundy it is still the second most grown white wine grape . Presumably it comes from this region, but is gradually being replaced by more "modern" varieties. The variety still holds its own in Eastern Europe . As in their homeland, they are not made into high-quality wines there , but rather into light, acidic, quickly drinkable wines. In the successor states of the Soviet Union, the area under vines is given as 10,000  hectares , in Romania also with 10,000, in Bulgaria it is 2000 hectares. Simple white wines and sparkling wines for everyday use that are not exported are produced.

The wines are relatively flat and unsuitable for barrel aging . As inexpensive wines, they are often consumed to be mixed with Crème de Cassis ( Kir , after the former mayor of Dijon Canon Kir ) or as spritzer wines . A large amount flows into the Crémant de Bourgogne and the Bourgogne Aligoté .

Only a few wines achieve excellent quality where the grape was grown on higher-quality locations, for example in Burgundy , where the small town of Bouzeron has an AOC Bourgogne Aligoté-Bouzeron . In better years, these fresh, fruity wines with crisp acidity should be on a par with a good Chardonnay . In 2007, a vineyard area of 1946 hectares was raised in France. (Source ONIVINS)

ancestry

Based on genetic studies of 352 grape varieties, it turned out that the varieties Aligoté, Aubin Vert , Auxerrois , Bachet Noir , Beaunoir , Chardonnay , Dameron , Franc Noir de la Haute Saône , Gamay Blanc Gloriod , Gamay , Knipperlé , Melon de Bourgogne , Peurion , Romorantin , Roublot and Sacy all emerged from spontaneous crosses between Pinot and Gouais Blanc (Weißer Heunisch). The Pinot variety was most likely Pinot Noir.

The success of this spontaneous crossing is explained by the fact that the two parent strains are genetically completely different. While the varieties of the Pinot family presumably come from Burgundy, the Gouais Blanc was brought to France by the Romans. In the vineyards of Burgundy and southern Champagne, both varieties were mixed together for several centuries .

Origin: Pinot × Gouais Blanc

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is half open. It is hairy white wool with a slight red tinge. The light green young leaves are hairy like a cobweb.
  • The medium-sized leaves are whole or three-lobed and hardly curved (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are medium in size compared to other varieties. The leaf surface (also called the leaf blade) is blistered and rough
  • The conical to cylindrical grape is small and loose berries. The rounded berries are also small and orange-white in color.

The vigorous grape variety gives good yields. The yields are usually very high in flat locations, so that targeted vine training has to reduce the yield in order to achieve good wine quality.

Aligoté ripens around six days after the Gutedel grape variety, making it one of the early- ripening varieties. The variety is sensitive to powdery mildew , anthracnose and raw rot .

Aligoté is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
