geography

Vieu is located at 520  m , about 16 kilometers north of the city of Belley and 49 km southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the southeast of Bugey , in a panoramic position on a plateau sloping to the south in the valley of the Valromey , between the ridges of the Planachat in the west and the Grand Colombier in the east.

The area of the 6.34 km² former municipal area includes a section of the Valromey. The Valromey forms a wide depression between two high Jura ridges . The river Séran , along which the western municipal boundary runs, is deepened into this depression . From the course of the river, the municipal area extends eastward over the Vieu plateau and the Arvière valley, which is also cut, to the plateau adjoining to the east at the foot of the Grand Colombier. The Karst spring of the Groin is located in a short side valley of the Arvière . This intermittent spring of the Vaucluse type has a heavy bed during the snowmelt and after prolonged rainfall, but it dries up completely during dry periods. In the south, the border lies above the steep drop to the Artemare basin. At 540  m , the highest point in the municipality is reached on the plateau above Vieu.

In addition to the actual village, Vieu also includes various hamlets and farms, namely:

  • Don ( 350  m ) in the Arvière valley above Artemare
  • Pont ( 360  m ) in the Arvière valley above Artemare
  • Vaux-Morets ( 390  m ) in the cut valley of the Arvière
  • Linod ( 445  m ) on the plateau between the valleys of Séran and Arvière
  • Chongnes ( 475  m ) on the plateau between the valleys of Séran and Arvière

Neighboring towns of Vieu are Champagne-en-Valromey in the north, Virieu-le-Petit and Chavornay in the east, Talissieu and Artemare in the south and Belmont-Luthézieu in the west.

history

The municipality of Vieu was inhabited very early. At Chongnes there was a Roman settlement that was destroyed in the 4th century. During excavations, the remains of an aqueduct , thermal baths and a temple were found. According to an inscription, the settlement was named Venetonimagienses .

Only in the Middle Ages does the place appear again in the documents, namely as Vyu in 1267. Over time, the spelling changed via Viuz (1345), Vicomagus (Latinized), Viomi (1460) to the current name Vieu, which was first written in 1634 is occupied.

In the Middle Ages, Vieu belonged to the rule of the Valromey, which was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , the village came to France in 1601.

Attractions

The parish church de l'Assomption was built in the 12th century on the ruins of the Roman temple and was one of the oldest church buildings in the region. Parts of Roman columns are integrated into the building; the polygonal choir dates from the 16th century. Various old houses from the 16th to 18th centuries have been preserved in the town center, including the Maison Rolland and the Maison de Brillat-Savarin . The Château de Machuraz from the period 1875 to 1889, inscribed as a monument historique , sits enthroned on a hill above Artemare. The layout of the castle corresponds to a castle from the 16th century, which replaced a medieval building at this point and was burned down during the revolution .

Economy and Infrastructure

Vieu was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, thanks to its beautiful location, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many of the employed people are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Artemare to Champagne-en-Valromey. Other road connections exist with Belmont-Luthézieu and Virieu-le-Petit.
