geography
Virieu-le-Petit is located at 620 m , about 17 kilometers north of the city of Belley and 51 km southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the southeast of Bugey , in a panoramic position on a leveled area on the lower western slope of the Grand Colombier , in the valley of the Valromey , above the Arvière valley cut.
The area of the 16.36 km² municipal area includes a section of the Valromey. The Valromey forms a wide depression between two high Jura ridges oriented in a north-south direction . The area is bordered to the west and north by the Arvière and Groin rivers . Both always run in an erosion valley cut deep into the area . From this valley the municipal area extends eastward over the slope of Virieu-le-Petit and the adjacent steep Jura slope to the height of Rabatel ( 1216 m ) and the ridge of the Grand Colombier. At its summit, the highest point of Virieu-le-Petit is reached at 1531 m . The western slope of this ridge is subdivided by the striking erosion valleys of Arvière and the village stream of Ameyzieu.
In addition to the actual village, Virieu-le-Petit also includes various hamlets and farms, namely (from south to north):
- Munet ( 560 m ) at the west foot of the Grand Colombier
- Assin ( 600 m ) at the west foot of the Grand Colombier
- Romagnieux ( 625 m ) on the plateau north of the village
- Vaux-Valençon ( 490 m ) in the Arvière valley
Neighboring towns of Virieu-le-Petit are Lochieu in the north, Anglefort in the east, Culoz and Chavornay in the south and Vieu and Champagne-en-Valromey in the west.
history
Virieu-le-Petit is mentioned for the first time under the name Viriacus ; from 1345 the name Viriacus parvus has been handed down. In 1342 the village came under the rule of La Balme, which was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , the village came to France in 1601.
