geography

Lochieu is located at 610  m , about 20 kilometers north of the city of Belley and 49 km southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the southeast of Bugey , in a panoramic position on the lower western slope of the Grand Colombier , in the valley of the Valromey , above the Arvière valley cut.

The Valromey forms a wide depression between two high Jura ridges oriented in a north-south direction . The western part is occupied by the Arvière basin . Here the Arvière unites with the northern side stream Brise . From the basin the area extends eastward over the slope of Lochieu and the subsequent densely wooded steep slope ( Forêt d'Arvière ) to the Hergues (up to 1390  m ) and the ridge of the Grand Colombier, on which at 1402  m the highest elevation in the Area of Lochieu is reached.

The neighboring towns of Lochieu are Brénaz in the north, Corbonod and Anglefort in the east, Virieu-le-Petit in the south and Champagne-en-Valromey in the west.

history

In the remote headwaters of the Arvière on the ridge of the Grand Colombier was around 1135 under Amadeus III. The Carthusian monastery of Chartreuse d'Arvières was founded by Savoy . Lochieu has been under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy since the Middle Ages. With the Treaty of Lyon , the village came to France in 1601.

Attractions

The village church of Lochieu was rebuilt in the 19th century and contains, among other things, a marble altar from the monastery of Arvières. Of the secular buildings, a mansion built in 1501 should be mentioned. The Musée du Bugey-Valromey is located in a Renaissance house in the center of the village and shows visitors the life and handicrafts of Valromey since the 18th century. The ruins of the former Carthusian monastery have been preserved in which a botanical garden was laid out according to medieval tradition.
