geography

Chavornay is located at 410  m , about 14 kilometers north of the city of Belley and 52 km southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the south-east of Bugey , in a panoramic position on a slope inclined to the south-west at the foot of the Grand Colombier , at the southern entrance into the valley of the Valromey , around 200 m above the valley level of the Séran .

The Valromey forms a wide depression between two high Jura ridges . The western part of the area is occupied by a south-sloping plateau of the Valromey. This plateau is separated from the slope of Chavornay to the east by the erosion valley of a short side stream of the Séran. To the east, the area extends over the steep, densely wooded slope, partially marked by rock walls, to the wide Jura ridge of the Grand Colombier. On its southernmost summit, the Pointe de Fautriolet , the highest point in the area around Chavornay is reached at 1443  m .

In addition to the actual village, Chavornay also includes various hamlets and farms, namely (from south to north):

  • Ouche ( 350  m ) on the slope of Chavornay above the Séran valley
  • Charaillin ( 460  m ) on the western slope of the Grand Colombier
  • La Chapelle ( 450  m ) on the slope above the village
  • Vovray ( 500  m ) on the western slope of the Grand Colombier
  • Dasin ( 530  m ) on the western slope of the Grand Colombier

Neighboring towns of Chavornay are Virieu-le-Petit in the north, Culoz and Béon in the east, Talissieu in the south and Vieu in the west.

history

Chavornay is mentioned for the first time in 1198 under its current name. The names Chauvornay (1258) and Chavorniacus (1265) have been handed down from a later period . The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman surname Cavorinius and means something like estate of Cavorinius (Cavoriniacum). Since the 12th century Chavornay belonged to the rule of La Tour , which was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , the village came to France in 1601.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-André originally goes back to a Gothic building that was later changed several times. Typical houses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in Chavornay and in the various hamlets.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chavornay was a predominantly agricultural village. Viticulture still plays a role as a source of income for the locals on the slopes below Chavornay today . The slopes belong to the protected designation of origin Bugey . There are also some local small businesses, including a cheese dairy. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the vicinity.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Talissieu to Virieu-le-Petit. Another road connection is with Artemare .
