geography
Sutrieu is located at 620 m , about 21 kilometers north of the city of Belley and 44 km southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the southeast of Bugey , in a panoramic position on the flat western slope of the Séran , in the Valromey valley , at the eastern foot of the Planachat .
The area of the 19.05 km² former municipal area includes a section of the Valromey. The Valromey forms a wide depression between two high Jura ridges oriented in a north-south direction . The eastern boundary of the municipality runs along the Séran, which flows partly in an open valley, partly deepened into the plateaus like a gorge, through the Valromey southwards. From the course of the river the community area extends westward over the plateau of Fitignieu and the subsequent gently rising, agriculturally used slope of Sutrieu. To the west it is bordered by a densely wooded steep slope that leads to the summit of the Col de la Lèbe and the ridge of the Planachat. At this height, Sutrieu's highest point is reached at 1204 m .
In addition to the actual place, Sutrieu also includes various villages, hamlets and farms, namely:
- Fitignieu ( 550 m ) on a plateau west of the Séran
- Fossieu ( 600 m ) on the western slope of the Séran
- Mongonod ( 615 m ) at the eastern foot of the Planachat
- Cossonod ( 640 m ) on a ledge at the eastern foot of the Planachat
- Charancin ( 680 m ) at the southeast foot of the Planachat
- Saint-Maurice ( 715 m ) on the ascent to the Col de la Lèbe
Neighboring parishes of Sutrieu are
- Lompnieu in the north,
- Champagne-en-Valromey in the east,
- Belmont-Luthézieu in the south,
- Plateau d'Hauteville with Thézillieu and Cormaranche-en-Bugey to the west.
history
Sutrieu was first mentioned in a document as early as 875, when the village and its surroundings passed to the Tournus monastery . The neighboring villages of Fitignieu and Charancin appear in the documents for the first time in the 14th century, only the parish of Saint-Maurice near Charancin is mentioned as early as 1135. In the Middle Ages Sutrieu belonged to the rule Valromey, which was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , the village came to France in 1601. The hamlet of Saint-Maurice was set on fire by German troops in 1944. With effect from January 1, 1974, the previously independent municipalities of Fitignieu and Charancin were merged with Sutrieu.
Attractions
The parish church of Sutrieu was built in Gothic style and extensively restored in 1968. There is a gothic country chapel in Charancin. Fitignieu Church is a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic styles. A little outside of Saint-Maurice is the Saint-Maurice-de-Charancin chapel from the 12th century, which escaped destruction in 1944 due to its remote location. Numerous traditional farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the various villages.

Economy and Infrastructure
Sutrieu was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry until well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, thanks to its beautiful location, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many of the employed people are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Artemare through the Valromey to Brénod . Further road connections exist with Lilignod, Passin and over the Col de la Lèbe with Thézillieu.
