Decize is a French town with 5393 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Nièvre in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is the capital of the eponymous canton of Decize .
geography
The city lies on the Loire River , right at the confluence of the right tributary Aron . The Canal du Nivernais , which started from Auxerre and conquered the Morvan Mountains , also flows directly next to it . After crossing the Loire, which is not navigable here, watercraft are connected to the Canal latéral à la Loire (German: Loire-Seitenkanal ), which runs south of the Loire .
history
Originally Decetia was the name of a Gallo-Roman oppidum of the Celtic Haedu , which was already mentioned by Caesar in his commentaries . Because of its favorable traffic situation, the later Decize became a frequented trading center.
