Varennes-Vauzelles is a French municipality with 9298 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Nièvre in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
The municipality is located in the middle of France. It is the third most populous municipality in the Nièvre department. The community belongs to the Communauté d'agglomération de Nevers .
Since 1861, the municipality has a stop at the railway Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons-Lyon-Perrache which trains of TER Bourgogne Franche-Comté the connection Cosne-sur-Loire - Nevers is operated. The shortest travel time to Paris-Bercy is around 3h30.
history
Varennes-Vauzelles was originally a rural municipality. In 1912, a company built a locomotive workshop in Vauzelles. This transformed the agricultural society into a modern industrial society. Between 1921 and 1930, 350 houses were built that became a garden city .
Since June 1940, up to 300 people were interned in the commune since June 1940 in the camp for "enemy foreigners", then called camps des travailleurs volontaires du Clos Saint-Joseph, in the abandoned Château de Vernuche, today rue Colette, including Walter Benjamin , Hans Sahl , Hermann Kesten , Hans Fittko, husband of Lisa Fittko . Benjamin planned a literary magazine "Bulletin de Vernuche. Journal des travailleurs du 54e régiment" here.
In 1969 the municipality of Varennes-les-Nevers was renamed Varennes-Vauzelles. In the 1950s and especially in the 1970s, more new settlements were built.
