Fourchambault in a French town in the department of Nièvre in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . Fourchambault lies on the banks of the Loire , about six kilometers northwest of Nevers . The inhabitants are called Fourchambaultais or Fourchamballais.

geography

Since 1861, the municipality has a railway station on the railway line Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons-Lyon-Perrache which trains of TER Bourgogne Franche-Comté the connection Cosne-sur-Loire - Nevers is operated.

economy

Fourchambault was the production site of the Italian scooter manufacturer Piaggio ; from 1957 to 1962, 30,000 Vespa 400 small cars were built at the Fourchambault plant. Today the city is struggling with economic difficulties, the population decreased from 6,240 in 1962 to currently 4,229 (as of January 1, 2017), the unemployment rate is 16%, the average income is 13,606 euros in 1999.

politics

Mayor of Fourchambault is Alain Herteloup. In the French presidential elections 2017 , Emmanuel Macron received 56.45 % of the vote in the second ballot, Marine Le Pen 43.55% of the vote in Fourchambault. In the first ballot, Macron (21.38%) was more than 7 percentage points behind Le Pen (28.95%).

Partnerships

Fourchambault has been related to Rathvilly in County Carlow, Ireland since 1998 and to Pontedera in Tuscany (Italy) since 2003/05 .

Personalities

The author of Irma la Douce , Alexandre Breffort (born 1901), and the metallurgical engineer Pierre-Émile Martin (1824–1915) come from Fourchambault . His father Émile Martin ran a foundry in Fourchambault, which supplied the individual parts for numerous French bridges, u. a. for the Nevers railway bridge and the Tarascon – Beaucaire railway bridge .
