Sacré-Cœur

Basilica, westwork

The monastery , founded in 973 by Count Lambert von Chalon , was subordinated to Cluny Monastery as early as 999 by the Bishop of Auxerre . As a result of the affiliation, the first monastery church (Paray I) was consecrated in 1004 . Before 1050 it was extended by adding a vestibule, but was replaced by a new building before the end of the century.

The construction of today's church, called Paray III in architectural history, began in 1090 under Abbot Hugo von Cluny and was largely completed in 1130 (or in the second half of the 12th century). Its design was closely related to that of the much larger Cluny III church . Since only a few remains of it have survived, the priory church in Paray-le-Monial is gladly taken to get an idea of its great role model.

Paray-le-Monial and its church have been one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in France since the late 19th century . The pilgrimages refer to the devotion to the Sacred Heart, triggered by the visions of Marguerite-Marie Alacoque in the second half of the 17th century .

Building division

Hotel de Ville

The church that exists today is a basilica with a three- bay main building and a single-nave transept, two small west towers and a large crossing tower. The church has a total length of 63.5 m (including the vestibule and the eastern radial chapel) and a width of 22.35 m (excluding the transept). With its 40.50 m, the transept looks disproportionate compared to the almost square nave (length: 22 m to the crossing). The main nave of the nave is 22 m high, including the crossing tower, the total height of the church is 56 m.

Based on the model in Cluny, the choir is designed as an ambulatory choir with a chapel wreath, with the construction height increasing from the chapel wreath via the ambulatory to the choir itself. This results in an impressive staggering of the building mass in the exterior view of the east building of the church.

Also noticeable is the almost complete lack of architectural sculpture, both on the tympanum and on the capitals of the columns.

town hall

The Hôtel de Ville (town hall) in the historic old town, the former town house of the rich cloth maker Jayet, in the style of the early Renaissance , with its yellow facade, is particularly interesting for its decorations. Shell ornaments and medallions with portraits of French kings cover the entire facade.

Town twinning

The twin cities are Bad Dürkheim , Bethlehem , Payerne and Wells .
