history
The old name of Bois-Sainte-Marie, Sancta Maria de Bosco , reminds us that the town center used to be in a forest. The place name was first mentioned in 998 in a collection of documents from Cluny . There was originally a priory in the village, which was destroyed in the 16th century during the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598).
In the Middle Ages , Bois-Sainte-Marie was surrounded by a city wall with three city gates. After the destruction of the citadel on Mount Dun ( Saint-Racho ) in 1181, the population of Bois-Sainte-Marie grew. The village became the seat of a royal castellany and the seat of an archpriest who administered 32 parishes . In Bois-Sainte-Marie there was a mint (Hôtel des Monnaies) , a salt chamber for the Gabelle ("salt tax") and a royal prévôté . In the early 15th century, the town suffered attacks from marauding Armagnacs . And as the 15th century progressed, Bois-Sainte-Marie lost its importance, while La Clayette gained importance.
During the French Revolution (1789-1799) Bois-Sainte- Marie was renamed to Bois Marie . In 1793 Bois Marie received the status of a municipality and was the canton capital. In 1801 it was given the right to local self-government under its current name.
