Baugy was first mentioned in the 6th century as Balbiacensis as the main town of the pagus of the same name. The place name arose from the Gallo-Roman name Balbius . In 679 Baugy was mentioned as Balbiago ultra Ligerim ('across the Loire'). In 756 it appeared as villa Balgiaco in a deed relating to an exchange of land between the Abbeys of Perrecy and Saint-Martin d'Autun . In the 9th century the village belonged to the county of Autun . From 1088 the parish belonged partly to the Marcigny priory and thus followed the Cluniac reform . The remaining part belonged to the Semur barony and later to the Seigneurie of Arcy Castle in Vindecy .
