Pontius von Cimiez (* around 210, † 257) was a martyr and saint of the Catholic Church . His feast day is May 14th; in Catalonia May 11th.

Legend

According to the tradition of a certain Valerianus , who calls himself an eyewitness, Pontius was baptized by the Roman bishop Pontianus . He allegedly converted the Roman emperor Philip Arabs to the Christian faith. During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Valerian , he fled to Cemellum ( Cimiez near Nice ), but was captured and beheaded there.

Other local and regional traditions deal with conversions in the mountain valley of the Ubaye River and in Catalonia . In Barcelona he is said to have healed the sick with the help of herbs, which is why he is venerated there as the patron saint of herbalists and beekeepers . Every year on May 11th, herb markets take place in several cities in Catalonia.

Adoration

In France his name is Saint-Pons , in Catalonia and Spain he is revered as Sant Ponç and San Poncio , respectively . In the south of France, "Pons" was a very common first name (e.g. Pons (Toulouse) ). Several churches and places bear his name:
