Saint-Pons is a French municipality with 293 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ardèche in the Region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Berg-Helvie and the municipal association Berg et Coiron .

geography

Saint-Pons is located on the southern slope of the Plateau du Coiron , 14 kilometers northwest of Montélimar and 15 kilometers southeast of Aubenas between Saint-Jean-le-Centenier in the west and Sceautres in the northeast. The Escoutay flows through the municipality. The hamlet of La Rochechérie is part of Saint-Pons.

history

In 1060 Saint-Pons was first mentioned as Sanctus Pontii . Pons (Ponce, Pontius) was a martyr who lived in the 3rd century and proselytized in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department . In the Middle Ages , Saint-Pons belonged to the Barony of Alba-la-Romaine , which was named after the Barons Aps . The barons of Aps shared control of the place with the abbots of Pébrac . A roughly square fortification wall was drawn around the place, with a gate on each side and a tower on each of the northern corners. Remnants of the towers have been preserved.

Attractions

The chapel de Roche chérie in the hamlet of La Rochechérie was built on the slope of a volcanic rock ( neck ). It is in poor condition and is being restored.

Important branches of business in Saint-Pons are the timber industry , arable farming , the breeding of domestic cattle , domestic sheep , poultry and honeybees . The service sector (including trade and transport) also plays a role.
