Chauzon is a French municipality with 386 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ardèche in the Region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The inhabitants are called Chauzonnais (es) .

geography

Chauzon is located in the foothills of the Cevennes , in the extreme south of the department, on the right bank of the Ardèche . The place borders among other things on the neighboring communes Ruoms and Vinezac . The next largest city is Aubenas , 15 kilometers northeast. In addition to the Ardèche, the Ligne also flows through the municipality.

history

The area around Chauzon has been inhabited by humans since the Stone Age. Traces of an ancient settlement dating back to Roman times have been found in the municipality. In addition, numerous limestone and bronze dolmens testify to a settlement 2000 years ago.

In 1773 Chauzon was made a parish, which made the place one of the oldest and most important centers of Catholicism in the region. This parish emerged from the community association Balazuc . It is still subordinate to the diocese of Viviers today .

politics

Chauzon belongs to the Gorges de l'Ardèche municipal association. Colette Arnaud , who is not party to the party, has been mayor of the village since March 2008 .

Attractions

Chauzon is a village with houses all built from the limestone typical of the region. It comes from the Ruoms quarries and was then transported to Chauzon. The houses of the community have therefore been built so close to one another that only narrow streets in between allow a difficult crossing of the community. The place also houses a church in neo-Gothic style.

Many tourists also travel to the municipality because of its proximity to the famous Ardèche gorges, which can be visited a little upstream. There are also many accessible caves in the municipal area. Next to this are the rocky cliffs on the Cirque de gens , which are popular with initiated climbers . Other sights are the meander of the Ligne, as well as the bottlenecks in the direction of Ruoms.
