Banne is a touristic French commune with 666 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the west of the French department of Ardèche . The inhabitants are called Bannards and Bannardes .

geography

Banne is located at the foot of the Cevennes in the south of the department, in the alluvial valley of the Chassezac river . There the municipality borders on the neighboring municipalities of Les Vans and Saint-Paul-le-Jeune . After Saint-Ambroix is 14 km, km to Les Vans 10th The next larger city is Alès , 27 kilometers to the southwest.

history

Limestone grave finds, such as the barrow of La Lauze, show that the site was already settled by the Gauls . The place was first mentioned as Bane with its castrum in the 13th century. According to theories, the name of the place is derived from the word bono , which means the horn in the local dialect . Horns probably refer to the numerous rocks in the area that are shaped like pointed horns.

In the early Middle Ages the place belonged to the Banne family of the same name, until the 16th century it was administered by the Roure, an old noble family from the Vivarais . At that time the settlement was specifically expanded into a city and grew in wealth. But when Count François-Louis de Saillans started a royal counter-revolution during the French Revolution , in which 1,500 peasants followed him and the fortress was conquered for the first time in 1792, violent disputes broke out. The palace and large parts of the city were almost completely destroyed in arson attacks by the Republicans as a result of the war. General Louis Alexandre d'Albignac recaptured the community, but Banne's wealth was finally put to an end. Only in 1832, after the neighboring parish of Saint-Paul-le-Jeune had split off, Banne became an independent commune on royal orders.

economy

The prosperity of the community in the Middle Ages was based primarily on coal deposits that were mined until the middle of the 20th century. These are the only ones in the entire department. Since the end of coal mining, an artificial forest has hidden the traces of the old industry. The viaduct of Doulovy, built in 1876, is one of the last examples of coal mining.

Attractions

In Banne you can still see the remains of the old fortress wall and the ruins of the imposing castle, which was built in the 12th century and burned down in 1792. After reconstruction work, some of the terraces and arched sandstone stables are intact and can be viewed again.

But the village with its ancient houses and alleys is also worth seeing, as are the castles of Lèbres and Larque. A memorial in honor of the resistance fighters who arrested a group of German soldiers on July 30, 1944, commemorates those who died in World War II . The Romanesque church, which was restored in the 19th century, is known for its chiseled catheter . The nearby Musée de l'Oeuf décoré et de l'icônes exhibits ancient and contemporary depictions of painted eggs, as well as religious paintings and icons .

In the municipality there is also the forest de Païolive, which has bizarre limestone formations, and the Doulovy Viaduct, a former delivery bridge with railroad tracks.
