Borne is a French commune with 51 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the far west of the Ardèche department . The residents are called Bourniquels and Bourniquelles .
geography
The community lies in a sparsely populated high valley on the Borne River , a tributary of the Chassezac , which was also the namesake of the village. The place is framed by the mountains of the Cevennes , part of the Massif Central , such as the Col de la Croix de Bauzon , the Col de Meyrand and the Col du Bez . Borne is part of the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Nature Park . The nearest towns are Langogne in the Lozère department , 29 km as the crow flies, and Aubenas , 51 km away.
history
The place Borne was first mentioned in 1152 when Guillaume, the feudal lord of the municipality, founded the later Cistercian Abbey of Les Chambons near the hamlet of Les Chambons. The monks were supposed to cultivate the barren and barren land and grow food. In the 14th and 16th centuries, during the wars of religion , as well as during the French Revolution , the abbey was plundered and heavily devastated several times. The building blocks were then sold or used for other structures. A portion of that was church in the neighboring village of Montselgues incorporated. Borne is a picturesque village in the Cevennes and the starting point for many hiking trails in the area.
