The continuous decline in the number of inhabitants since the beginning of the 20th century is essentially due to the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs. In addition, almost all mountain regions in Europe were depopulated in favor of the cities located in the valley.

economy

Traditionally, the population lived from cattle breeding and a little arable farming on partially terraced fields, which, however, only produced low yields due to the altitude, so that chestnuts often formed the basic supply. Today forestry and tourism play the most important roles in the economic life of the place in the form of the rental of holiday homes ( gîtes ) .

Attractions

  • The single-nave parish church of Ste-Madeleine , built in the second half of the 19th century in neo-Gothic style , has a single-tower facade.
outside
  • The wooded and hilly surroundings are ideal for walks and hikes.
  • The Trappist Abbey of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, inaugurated in 1850, is only approx. 8 km (driving distance) away. The Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson spent the night of 26-27 September 1868 here on his donkey journey through the Cevennes .
