Astet is a French commune with 42 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ardèche department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region . The inhabitants are called Asténiens.

geography

Astet is located at the beginning of the valley through which the Ardèche flows in the highlands of the Cevennes , in the south of the department. The municipality borders on the neighboring municipality of Lanarce . The next largest city is Aubenas , 30 kilometers south-east. The place can be reached via a route connecting the national road that leads to the Col de la Chavade (1266 meters high). The Espézonnette River also crosses the municipality. The village itself is located on a mountainside and is one of the snowiest in the region. The landscape is characterized by rocky cliffs, gorse and fern bushes. Astet is a refuge for large families of wild boars.

history

Astet had only been a community for a short time in the Middle Ages and existed until 1790. Subsequently, the place was part of the neighboring community of Mayres . On July 12, 1907, the place was merged with the neighboring village of Mares to form today's Astet municipality.

Attractions

Tourism is very important for the Astet municipality. It is part of the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Nature Park . Around the place there is an approximately 2000 hectare forest area in the middle of the Cevennes. In the higher elevations there are pastures and the Croix-de-Bauzon ski station. La Burle is located in the village . The source of the Ardèche is located in a small forest called Mazan . The Massif du Boizon is passed on a hiking route that also stops at Les Issartoux and Bel Air Cham-Longe .
