Pont du Gua

Beaumont is a French municipality with 244 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ardèche in the Region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Its residents are called Beaumontois and Beaumontoises in French .

geography

The municipality of Beaumont is located on the Beaume River and consists of twelve small hamlets at the foot of the Cevennes , the largest of which are called La Roche , Le Gua and La Font des Roches . The Drobie and Salindres rivers also cross the green municipal area in the south-west of the department. Beaumont is part of the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Nature Park . Neighboring municipalities are Valgorge and Ribes . The next largest city is Aubenas , 20 kilometers to the northeast.

history

At first the community was under the feudal rule of the Beaumont family, in the 17th century the Vogüés took over the rulings of Beaumont.

Beaumont has only been linked to its neighboring communities by a road since the end of the last century. Before that, a dirt road for muleteers was the only connection to the Beaume river valley. The construction of a bridge, which was commissioned in 1850 for 6,000 francs, also failed because the structure was torn away due to the floods caused by violent thunderstorms in August, before the actual inauguration. This misfortune meant the financial ruin of the residents.

Culture and sights

Beaumont is an old village whose barns are still covered with limestone slabs. Some of them have been converted into restaurants. The Romanesque church with its flat steeple is also made of limestone. The Pont du Gua is a bridge over the Beaume that connects the towns of Beaumont and Sanilhac . The best panoramic view of the municipality is from the Croix de la Tourasse , a lookout point above Beaume and Drobie.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community of Beaumont lives from agriculture. Olives, chestnuts, wine and raspberries are grown on the mountain slopes. Sheep breeding is also an important source of income for the citizens, who for the most part still work as farmers.
