geography

The municipality of Le Béage is located in the west of the department in the Mézenc massif, part of the Cevennes , and is therefore one of the highest in the Ardèche. The municipality is mostly forested, the highest point is on the Suc de Montfol at 1602 m. The Lac d'Issarlès extends south of it. Neighboring municipalities are Les Estables and Lac d'Issarlès . history

In the Middle Ages, the Chemin du Pal , a connecting route between the Rhone Valley and Le Puy-en-Velay , ran through the village . More and more people settled there over the years, so that the number of inhabitants rose to 2,400 at the beginning of modern times. The place name is also evidence of the community's old function. He either comes from the French term Péage from, which means tolls or from the Occitan word Bizadge what describes a village at a crossroads.

In the 10th century the feudal castle on the river Veyradeyre was occupied by the first feudal lords of the place. These also took part in the first crusade , from which they did not return alive.

In the Middle Ages the place was administered by the Montlaur family. At that time, Le Béage was best known for its Chartreuse den Bonnefoy monastery , which was built by the disciples of the Carthusian Saint-Bruno in the 12th century. However, it was almost completely looted during the Wars of Religion. It was rebuilt in the 18th century, but completely devastated again at the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789.
